How it is calculated
Total amount of the sale = item price + shipping charged + sales tax. The final value fee is the category rate applied to that total (13.6% for most categories) up to the per-item threshold, then the lower rate on the portion above — for example a $9,000 sale in most categories pays 13.6% on $7,500 and 2.35% on the remaining $1,500. eBay adds a per-order fee of $0.30 (total ≤ $10) or $0.40 (over $10), except in categories that are exempt such as athletic shoes over $150.
Promoted Listings (general) charge your chosen ad rate on the total amount when the sale is attributed to the ad — the table shows the profit impact at each rate so you can cap it. The international fee (1.65%) applies when the buyer's address is outside the US and the item is not shipped through eBay International Shipping. Payment processing is already inside the final value fee.
Net profit = item price + shipping charged − eBay fees − product cost − postage − other cost. Sales tax is collected and remitted by eBay; it raises the fee base but is not your income. Store subscriptions, Promoted Listings Advanced (cost per click), and the 2%-of-total "very high not as described" or below-standard seller surcharges are not modelled.

- Insertion fees: the first 250 listings each month are free; after that $0.35 per listing. A store subscription changes several of these rates — not covered in this version.

Frequently asked questions
Is the final value fee charged on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount of the sale: item price plus the shipping charged to the buyer plus any sales tax or other applicable fees. That is why offering free shipping does not reduce fees — the shipping is just inside the price.
What changes with an eBay Store?
Store subscribers (Starter to Enterprise) get more free listings and lower final value fees in some categories, for example 12.35% instead of 13.6% in most categories with a Basic store or above. This calculator is the no-store schedule; a store version is planned.
Does eBay refund fees on returns?
If you fully refund the buyer, eBay credits the final value fee (the per-order fee is not refunded in most cases). Partial refunds get a proportional credit. The calculator does not model returns; treat the return cost as the postage you cannot recover.
Where do the rates come from?
eBay's selling fees help page for eBay.com (Fees, credits & invoices › Selling fees), checked on 2026-09-20. eBay changes rates roughly once a year; the page is re-checked automatically every day.
Are managed payments fees separate?
No. Since eBay moved to managed payments, payment processing is included in the final value fee — there is no separate PayPal-style percentage.
