How it is calculated
Cost per order = card fee + Shopify transaction fee (only with a third-party gateway) + (plan price + overhead) ÷ orders per month. With Shopify Payments the card fee is the plan's online rate (2.9% / 2.7% / 2.5% + 30¢ on the US pricing page). With another gateway you pay that gateway's rate plus Shopify's 2% / 1% / 0.6% (Plus 0.2%). Yearly billing lowers the plan price (Basic $19, Grow $49, Advanced $299 per month) but is paid upfront.
The plan table recomputes the total monthly cost for every plan at your volume so you can see where Grow or Advanced start to pay for themselves: the lower card rate saves 0.2 points of sales per step, so Grow beats Basic (monthly billing) above about $20,000 of monthly card sales. The marketplace table applies Amazon's referral fee only (15% Home & Kitchen, no FBA), Etsy's listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25, and eBay's 13.6% + $0.40 to the same order value with the same product and shipping cost.
Not included: Shopify Shipping label costs, in-person and international card rates, currency conversion (1.5–2% on top), chargeback fees, taxes and refunds. Rates outside the US differ.

- With Shopify Payments (US online rates as published on the pricing page): Basic 2.9% + 30¢, Grow 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢. If you use another gateway you pay its fee plus a Shopify transaction fee of 2% / 1% / 0.6% (Plus 0.2%).
- The plan fee per order falls as volume grows: on Basic at 50 orders/month it is $0.50 per order, at 500 orders $0.05. Grow pays for itself around 2,000 orders of $50/month versus Basic.
- At a $50 order, Shopify Basic costs about $1.75 in card fees plus the plan share — usually 4–6% total — versus roughly 15% on Amazon (before FBA), 11–12% on Etsy and 14% on eBay. The difference is that Shopify brings no traffic; you pay for it with ads.

Frequently asked questions
Which Shopify plan should a new seller pick?
Most stores start on Basic. Grow (formerly Shopify) makes sense once the lower card rate saves more than the $40/month price difference — about $20,000/month in card sales at the 0.2 percentage-point gap — or when you need staff accounts and professional reports. Advanced is for stores doing well over $100,000/month.
Do I pay both a card fee and a transaction fee?
Only if you do not use Shopify Payments. With Shopify Payments you pay the card rate only. With PayPal, Stripe or another gateway you pay that provider's fee and Shopify's additional transaction fee (2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced).
Are the card rates official?
Plan prices are from shopify.com/pricing (US, 2026-09-20). The online card rates shown (2.9% / 2.7% / 2.5% + 30¢) are the US Shopify Payments rates displayed on that page's rate details; rates vary by country and card type, so confirm in your Shopify admin under Settings › Payments.
How does this compare with marketplaces?
The comparison table below uses the same order value with Amazon's 15% referral fee (no FBA), Etsy's listing + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25, and eBay's 13.6% + $0.40. Marketplaces charge more but include the customer traffic; on Shopify you buy traffic yourself, so compare after adding your customer acquisition cost.
Are apps, themes and domain costs included?
No. Apps, paid themes, email marketing and the domain (about $15–20/year) are extra. Add them to the monthly overhead field to spread them across orders.
