How it is calculated

Landed cost = goods + freight + insurance + duty + additional tariffs + MPF + HMF + brokerage + inland delivery. In the US, customs value is the transaction value of the goods (the FOB price), so duty and tariffs are calculated on the goods value only — not on freight or insurance. The merchandise processing fee is 0.3464% of value, subject to a minimum and maximum per formal entry that CBP adjusts each fiscal year (the defaults are the FY2025 figures as reference — check cbp.gov for the current ones). The harbor maintenance fee is 0.125% of value on ocean imports only.

The duty rate is the HTS 'General' rate for your 10-digit code; additional tariffs (Section 301 on many goods from China, Section 232 on steel and aluminium products, and the country-based tariffs introduced in 2025) are added on top and change by executive action — confirm the current stack with your broker before you pay a deposit. The pricing block uses the [pricing formula](/en/guide/marketplace-pricing-formula): price = (landed cost + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee% − margin%). This tool covers imports into the United States only.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the duty rate?

In the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (hts.usitc.gov) under your product's 10-digit HTS code, 'General' column. Additional tariffs (Section 301, 232, IEEPA) are listed in Chapter 99 and change by executive action; your customs broker or the CBP CSMS notices give the current stack for your origin country.

Is duty charged on freight?

Not in the US: customs value is the price paid for the goods (FOB/transaction value). Some countries (the EU, Canada, Australia) use CIF value and charge duty on freight and insurance as well; this tool is US-only.

What about the $800 de minimis exemption?

Duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value shipments was ended by the US in 2025 for commercial imports, so small parcels are now dutiable. Treat every shipment as subject to duty unless your broker confirms otherwise.

Does the calculator include inbound shipping to Amazon?

Enter it as inland delivery if the freight forwarder delivers to the FBA warehouse; otherwise add the last-mile cost in the Amazon FBA calculator's inbound field.
